Our Spanish Heritage

When the Ferrer’s first came from Barcelona, Spain to Sonoma County, California in the 1980s, there was not a single sparkling wine house in Carneros. But The Mediterranean climate, with its sloping hills and maritime influences, made the Ferrer’s reminiscent of their native Catalonia, and they knew the land would be well suited for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the two most important sparkling wine grapes.

Our Winemaking Team

Mike Crumly, VP of Production, along with Bob Iantosca, Executive Winemaker, and Steve Urberg, Winemaker, have created more award-winning California sparkling wines than any other winemaking team. Their collaboration, distinguished by meticulous clonal trials and groundbreaking research, continues to have a profound effect on the expression of the vineyard-driven sparkling and estate varietal wines of Gloria Ferrer.

Mike Crumly Talks About our Fermentation Process

Although the grapes have been harvested and pressed, there are further steps to take in order to make these grapes into the wine we know and love. Our VP of Production, Mike Crumly, walks us through this process from the fermenter to the oak barrels. L1 was harvested on August 20th.  The grapes had a two day cold soak before being inoculated with RC212 yeast.  Different flavors are extracted from the skins depending on what they a floating around in…cold soak…
