The Oscars are just a few days away. A night filled with celebrities, great movies, haute couture and long winded acceptance speeches. Needless to say, it is always fun to reflect back on the great movies of the past year. But I’m not here to be a film critic, I’m here to discuss sparkling wines, right? And a true movie novice or expert will notice that through the years sparkling wines have made their cameos and even held down scenes. So it only seemed fitting that we hand out our own Oscars to the movies that have the best sparkling wine moments through the years.
Casablanca: “Here’s looking at you kid”, was spoken over bubbles. Need we say more?
The Seven Year Itch: Or any Marilyn Monroe movie for that matter. The bubbles set the mood for the evening.
James Bond: Yes, that’s a bit general considering there are so many James Bond movies (from Sean Connery to Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig). When it comes to 007, there is no doubt about it that he loves his sparkling wines.
The Great Gatsby: Jay Gatsby without bubbles is like Reese’s Peanut Butter cups without the chocolate, it just doesn’t happen. This movie showcased this beverage of choice spilling out of nearly every ice bucket. Cheers to using flancy flutes.
The Muppets Movie: While the movies above are pretty glamorous, we have always so appreciated the famous sparkling wine scene in The Muppets Movie when the waiter serves Miss Piggy and Kermit “Only the Finest Sparkling Wine out of Idaho”.
So that sums up our favorites. We’ll be watching the Oscars this weekend with a glass of Gloria Ferrer 2010 Blanc de Blancs (as a nod to Casablanca) with an appreciation of the supporting role sparkling wines have played in cinema through the years.
