2008 Carneros Merlot
The weather in the growing season of 2008 created challenges for both wine growers and grape vines. But, fortunately for the Merlot planted on our block tucked away on a hillside on the southern side of our estate vineyards, those struggles made for concentrated, expressive fruit.

This elegant, cool climate Merlot has aromas of blackberry, currant and red cherry fruit with herbal and cedar notes to follow. It is rich and layered with an elegant structure and acidity with integrated tannins that have softened from bottle aging.
This Merlot pairs well with grilled tri-tip and lamb. For cheese, try something aged like Manchego or cheddar.
This finely balanced Merlot demonstrates how commitment to well-drained soils, open canopies and modest yields on cool Carneros vineyard sites results in full varietal expression. South of our winery, the Thimbleberry Block of our 335-acre estate vineyards clings to the hillsides of a small valley, producing Merlot in clay soils similar to those of Pomerol in Bordeaux. The 2008 vintage exhibits exuberant fruit, textural richness and overall elegance.

2008 will be remembered by Carneros grape growers as a challenging year. It was one that required more attentive care of the vines. Record frost in March and April damaged some of the vines followed by an unusual dry spell which caused the yields to be lighter and slightly overripe. Despite the year’s challenges the fruit quality was excellent as the lower yields produced highly concentrated fruit favors.
- The grapes were de-stemmed and lightly crushed
- Cold soaked for three days, then fermented at 85˚F
- Gentle pump-overs three times daily
- Racked and returned to barrel twice
- Aged 12 months in (82%) French (11%) Hungarian (7%) American oak barrels.
