Glorious Women

Founded in the early 1980s, Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards was named as a tribute to Gloria, José Ferrer's wife. In the Ferrer family, women have always played an important role. José's mother, Dolores, ran their winery in Spain for many years after her husband died in the Spanish Civil War. It's no surprise that José named this winery for Gloria.

In honor of this exceptional woman, Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards salutes the distinctive women who, through their own creativity and passion, have left their own unique marks on Gloria Ferrer.

Ann Rea - Painter/Artist

San Francisco-based artist Ann Rea, The California Painter, has a rapidly growing national artistic reputation, and the collectible status of her work is quickly increasing. Rea’s work has been gaining increasing local and national exposure, most recently on “The Fine Living Network” and in Fortune magazine both shot at Gloria Ferrer’s vineyards.

For seven years Ann Rea didn’t paint or draw a single thing. She worked at a variety of anxiety producing jobs in high tech, investing, and disaster relief until an encounter with two stage-four breast cancer patients made her realize that life is too short to avoid pursuing her dream. Ann started using painting as an active mediation to alleviate anxiety. Collectors consistently commented that her paintings made them feel happy and calm, this was no accident.

At the very end of 2004 Ann quit her job, sold her house and moved to the beach. With the encouragement of renowned painters Gregory Kondos and Wayne Thiebaud she was finally determined to make a living as a painter and to pursue her dream.

Gloria Ferrer was one of the first wineries that Ann worked with. She painted their vineyards in the spring and then returned in the Fall to create a series of a dozen collectable prints. Los Carneros is one of eleven viticulture areas where Ann has painted.

On the surface it seems that her subjects are vineyards but actually its ambient light and color, the unique visual essence of each terroir. Light, or color, changes with the atmosphere and temperature, which is why she creates each piece in the vineyards at specific times of day. This artistic approach allows her to create truly authentic and timeless mementos of the wine country.

Ann has painted several in eleven of California’s American Viticulture Areas.

Internationally renowned artists Wayne Thiebaud and Gregory Kondos commend her work. Rea’s paintings have been exhibited in galleries throughout California, New Mexico, and France. She is regularly commissioned for private and corporate collections. Her book, Terroir in Color, a collection of her California vineyard paintings, will be published next year.
